COURSE 1 - 1.2. Secure hardware - BIOS settings

QUICK INFO:

  • to access BIOS settings in a StarLabs computer:

    • if function lock is enabled: starting from the computer switched off, press "Fn" + "F2" immediately after pressing the power key > provide password(s);

    • if function lock is not enabled: starting from the computer switched off, press "F2" immediately after pressing the power key > provide password(s).

  • to see if function lock is enabled:

    • log in the default browser (e.g. Linux). Press the "F2" key. If the "Volume down" icon appears on screen, the function lock is enabled. Otherwise, it's disabled.

  • to enable/disable function lock:

    • press the "lock" key.

  • to make the StarLabs computer air-gapped:

    • format computer, reinstall Linux OS.

    • after entering the BIOS settings, "Advanced" tab > "I/O Port Access" > set "Wireless Lan" on "Disabled".

    • never connect the computer to the Internet via Ethernet cable.

  • to boot from USB stick (e.g. to launch Tails OS, see later):

    • once in BIOS settings, "Save & Exit" tab > "Boot Override" > select USB stick.

  • Different computer brands: to see how to access the Boot Menu (not the BIOS settings), see https://tails.net/install/linux/index.en.html section 5/7.

    • Alternatively, to see how to access the Boot Menu and/or the BIOS settings in your particular computer, ask AI.
